Flamingo offspring

Animal news | 22 June 2024

Flamingoküken.

Little white “balls of fluff” are back in the walk-in flamingo aviary at long last. We are pleased to report that our red flamingos have produced their first offspring since moving to their new facility in November 2020. The path to success wasn’t exactly easy. Firstly, the land section of the aviary had to be cleared of excess vegetation to create more space for mating. The keepers have kept the island well stocked with fresh soil to allow the birds to build their cone-shaped mud nests, in the centre of which they lay an egg. A number of branches were cut back to let more sunshine into the enclosure, and we also made a few adjustments to the birds’ feed. Our hard work and patience was rewarded ‒ around 17 eggs were laid this year and five red flamingo chicks have already hatched.
