Orangutan house

The new orangutan house combines innovative architecture with animal-friendly facilities designed to meet the guidelines for modern animal-keeping. As well as accommodating the great apes, the house will also be home to other Southeast Asian animal species such as binturongs and smooth otters as well as reptiles such as reticulated pythons, emerald tree monitor lizards, Lau banded iguanas, frilled lizards and giant blue-tongued skinks. A new dwelling for the three Aldabra giant tortoises has also been created in the house, allowing them to be viewed all year round.

The new orangutan house not only represents a significant improvement in the animals’ environment, it also provides space for the Zoo to fulfil its educational mission even better. An interactive exhibition enables visitors to learn all about the fragile rainforest ecosystem and the way of life of the Sumatran orangutans. We also provide information about the species conservation projects we support in Southeast Asia using Conservation Euro donations.
