Zoo Animal of the Year

Zoo Animal of the Year is a species conservation campaign in Germany, launched by the Zoological Society for the Conservation of Species and Populations (ZGAP), the German Zoological Society (DTG) and the Association of Zoo Supporters (GDZ). The very first Zoo Animal of the Year, back in 2016, was the jaguar. The campaign is funded by donations, and
Dresden Zoo has been a proud supporter since 2021.

The Zoo Animal of the Year 2025 is the armadillo. The campaign focuses on armadillos in general rather than a single species of armadillo. There are 23 armadillo species in total, all of which are native to Central and South America. Armadillos are the only mammals that have a shell made of real bone; this is covered by a layer of horn. This armour protects them against predators but also keeps out soil and substrate, as most species are expert diggers and live underground in burrows. Their bony shell also gives armadillos a very primitive appearance. They are in fact a very old group of mammals, whose ancestors diverged 65 million years ago from sloths and anteaters, which are their closest living relatives today.

Armadillo species are often threatened by habitat loss caused by agriculture and urbanisation; they also face risks from road traffic and hunting. For most species, however, population data is outdated and little is known about their biology and habitat preferences.
Species conservation projects in Brazil and Colombia are therefore trying to find out more about population sizes and habitat requirements, as well as conserving habitats and engaging with local communities. This knowledge is essential for the development of specific and sustainable initiatives to protect the animals.
As in previous years, we are a platinum sponsor of the campaign; as well as providing financial support we will be holding campaign days and events throughout the year focusing on armadillos.
